Your Questions About Varicose Veins

Michael asks…
Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins – Treatment Options for Spider Veins?
I was wondering what Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins is like. What exactly do they do, and is it painful? I’ve never been one to enjoy bleeding or pain since I was a kid. I just had a quick question about the disease itself. How common is it and what causes it? Thanks
Elizabeth

Rene Heasman answers:
Hey Elizabeth,
Well sclerotherapy usually involves using chemicals to block of veins that are causing the problem and it can be painful during the procedure, but I’m pretty sure they’ll use anaesthetics to help ease the pain. Vein problems are very common in Americans mainly because of our lifestyle. A lot of people stand for a long time on their job, carry a lot of weight (chubby :S), pregnancy, hereditary causes and it tends to happen with age as well.

Steven asks…
have an ointment treatment for varicose veins?
can anyone used ointment treatment for varicose veins? thank you!

Rene Heasman answers:
Marriza Diega,
To help prevent varicose veins or, if they are already present, you may assist the easing of the symptoms by avoiding prolonged standing or sitting still. Try to put your feet up frequently. Sit or lie down and raise the feet above the level of your hips, for example, use extra pillows under your feet on a bed or footrest. This helps to reduce blood ‘pooling’ in the veins. Moisturising cream can be helpful if the skin is dry, hard or itchy, or if there is eczema. Also, for eczema due to varicose veins, a short course of steroid cream may be needed. Aqueous cream is suitable and inexpensive, or there are other types available and you should ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice on the subject. If you have arterial disease causing poor circulation or peripheral vascular disease in the legs, you will need a medical assessment of your circulation to decide if compression stockings are suitable. If the varicose veins are ulcerated, there are ointments to treat that condition, but as you do not mention that, I shall not discuss this eventuality.

Donald asks…
how to get rid of my big varicose veins.. is schlerotherapy a good solution?

Rene Heasman answers:
If your veins are very big you are probably looking at surgery. A vein stripping. Only a medical professional can really tell you the pros and cons, after examining you.
Good Luck

Nancy asks…
Will daily cycling improve or worsen varicose veins?

Rene Heasman answers:
Varicose veins develop when you have faulty valves in your veins and weakened vein walls. Normally, the one-way valves in these veins keep the blood flowing efficiently against gravity up toward the heart. When these valves do not function properly, blood pools, pressure builds up, and the veins become weakened, enlarged, and twisted.
Regular exercise will aid circulation and strengthen vein walls. Your blood pressure will lower as your fitness improves.
If you are prone to varicose veins you will still get them. Probably not as bad. If you have them already it won’t get rid of them
