Your Questions About Varicose Veins

Steven asks…
Is there really any effective remedy to cure varicose veins?

Rene Heasman answers:
There are several options:
1) ligation & stripping
– the vein is completely removed
2) laser / radio frequency ablation
– the vein is scarred down from the inside
3) sclerotherapy / stab phlebectomies
– used for smaller veins

Not that I know of. And the treatment/injections they can give you are expensive.

Your Questions About Cause Of Varicose Veins

David asks…
am i being discriminated against because of my “disability”?
i have a progressive condition with has the capability of affecting my day to day activities – i cannot stand for long periods of time without making myself ill. i have varicose veins, caused by weak veins in my legs and from being overweight in the past. (i have never been pregnant). so i know the disability discrimination act covers me, but am not sure that it covers what i am about to ask.
i work part-time (contracted 12hrs a week) in fashion retail, so the job involves an amount of standing. they say they cannot provide me with a seat at the till point as it would be in breach of their health and safety (apparently?!?) I instead am offered the opportunity to have a 15 min break in a 4 hour shift on the provision that i work the extra 15 mins to make the time up (none of my other colleagues are offered this) so i technically end up working 4hrs and 15mins every shift, but only get paid for 4hrs. is this allowed? or should i be given the break as part of my 4 hrs and not in addition to?
under normal circumstances the amount of hours you have to work to get a 15 min break is 4 1/2.
i am in the UK. thanks.
i just want to add that i had been umemployed for 3 years because of my condtion and lack of skills prior to getting this job, i was sick of being on benefits and wanted to work.
however i never intended working in retail to be a long term solution as it is panning out to be. but time flies and what with the recession, finding alternative and more suitable employment has not been fruitful.

Rene Heasman answers:
I am baffled, under which H&S legislation does it deny someone working at a till point a seat and if there is,what about the cashiers in most supermarkets and other retail outlets.

Lizzie asks…
Are varicose veins and spider veins the same thing? and if so, what can i do to prevent them?
I work at a candy store which requires me to stand for long periods of time and am told that that is the cause of them as well as crossing your legs, what can i do to prevent this from happening? can i stand a certain way to relieve my legs?

Rene Heasman answers:
Spider veins, or telangectasias, are the most superficial (closest to your skin) veins. They are veins that have simply burst.
Varicose veins are deeper, more prominent, and often, more painful.
There have been some plastic surgeons who claim success with injecting saline or some such do make these go away.
Wearing support stockings is one potential solution.

Sandy asks…
Why do i have varicose veins on my face?
They have just appeared. I’m a size 6-8 & i haven’t put on any weight. I just don’t understand why they have just appeared, there to the light and right to my mouth you can’t see clearly them unless i stretch the skin & are very small. What could of caused this?! I’m trying to get pregnant but i’m not at the min!
I think there thead veins actually small purple!

Rene Heasman answers:
Are you sure they are varicose veins.
Varicose veins are swollen veins (usually on the legs) that look lumpy and bluish through the skin.
Does this describe yours or are yours more like what are called thread veins, which are tiny veins that appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and legs. Small thread veins are red, but larger ones look purplish.

Maria asks…
Spider veins , help !?
?
Im 15 years old and ive recentley noticed that i have spider veins right above my calves. They arent that bad, and i can easily cover them up with makeup, but just the though of them gets me upset. Ive been exercising and running a lot lately because im trying to loose weight. Im not overweight or anything though, because i know being overweight can put pressure on your legs and cause spider veins. My moms also has varicose and spider veins, but she told me that the reasoning why she has them is because she smokes. So im not sure if its really hereditary ? Can someone please give me some advice on how to make them go away , or appear lighter. Does sitting in the sun and getting color in my legs help? Im also very light skinned , so they are more noticible .

Rene Heasman answers:
Reducing your sugar intake would probably help.
See items 33 and 135 in http://www.rheumatic.org/sugar.htm

Betty asks…
Varicose vein in umbilical cord?
Im currently 32 weeks with baby number 4.
Has anyone had any experiance with a varicose vein in the umbilical cord? I asked today, and my doctor told me not to worry, but sometimes the vein can cause a clot, and the clot could potentaly kill baby. Im not that excited about her answer, and baby is growing on the small side so im a little anxious now. I am having weekly scans to keep an eye on the situation.
Any personal experiances of this would be really good to hear.
Thanks in advance for any input

Rene Heasman answers:
Terrifying. I’ve never even heard of that. I hope you and the baby are okay!

Your Questions About Varicose Veins Pictures

William asks…
I’m 19 and I have varicose vein? How to get rid of it.?
I have bulging varicose vein behind my right knee. No pain or bleeding yet but I find it really ugly!
I’m only 19 but i’m still a student so I didn’t stand around a lot. I tried elevating my right leg during my sleep but it doesn’t help. Help me! I’m really depressed about it and I don’t have thousands to fork out for expensive surgeries. I can fork out hundreds though.
I can’t find any picture on the internet to show you because mine isn’t as serious as those on the internet yet. But mine is only behind the knees and it has not extend out to my lower calve yet. I only have varicose vein on my right leg. Tell me what can I do to get rid of them please? I’m really miserable about it

Rene Heasman answers:
Absolutely nothing.

Rene Heasman answers:
Sclerotherapy – this procedure uses a highly concentrated saline solution or a specially made detergent that is injected directly into the vein, causing the vein to disappear gradually over three to six weeks. To read more >>>
http://www.specialistvascularclinic.com.au/sydneyveinclinic/sclerotherapy.html
Cost of treating one leg ranges from about a $100-$250. >>> http://theparks.net/what-does-sclerotherapy-cost/

Maria asks…
I’m only 15 and I already have a varicose vein?
I guess it’s genetic because my mom has them and her mom did as well.
I’m not really overweight at all; 5’2″ and about 110 lbs
If I do shoulder stand (picture: http://www.michael4reiki.com/images/shoulder_stand.jpg ) and walk every day along with ballet which I do normally, will it go away? or do I need some kind of laser surgery?

Rene Heasman answers:
Varicose veins don’t normally just go away, even if you exercise a lot. Toning up your leg muscles and wearing support hose while you rest can help reduce their appearance and prevent more from appearing but there is no magic fix. They are mostly (though not always) genetic, like stretch marks and cellulite. If you want to cover them up, you can wear pants, leggings, long skirts, and pantyhose/tights, or you could try self-tanner (getting a “real” tan will only make them worse)… BUT if they are fairly small and you don’t have very many, chances are most people will not even notice them– so don’t sweat it!

Steven asks…
My left testicle feels veiny?
Yesterday I noticed the side of my left testicle was feeling a bit veiny (like the way the back of the testices usually feel). I had a bath and that made it even more veiny, plus the left one was hanging. It’s not so bad today, I have to wait until Monday to visit the doctor. When I was looking up about this I found a picture of varicose veins in a testicle and I think that might be what it is, is this common? I thought only elderly people get varicose veins?
I’ve just started regularly shaving there too, don’t know if that has anything to do with it?

Rene Heasman answers:
Even young people can have Varicose veins. Varicose veins in your testes will increase when you lie down and will be lesser in the morning than the evening. Varicose veins are not hard to treat but left sided varicose need a little further poking for reasons pertaining to the venous drainage of the left testicle. Hopefully it’s not that bad. Let the doc see you .

Sandy asks…
Did Angelina Jolie get Botox or something? Check out her appearance with Brad last night…?
Hey everyone… so is it just me or did angelina jolie get botox? Or maybe she actually realized she was getting anorexic and gained 10 lbs or something? look at these pictures of her last night:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2009-08-11-basterds_N.htm
I’ve thought Angelina was looking old (aging badly for a 34 year old) and WAY TOO THIN (varicose veins in arms and her forehead) but check out those pictures. WOW. she looks like she’s in her mid twenties… or maybe it’s because the picture isn’t zoomed in enough?
Anyway, she looks hot (and i’m a girl) …. but also her legs and arms look toned and thicker than before.
The one bad thing is that I’ve thought despite her aging, she looks like one of the world’s most beautiful woman. Now she just looks hot/sexy/pretty… but like generic. She looks like jessica alba, megan fox, scarlett Jo… like they’re all pretty… but most girls can be with makeup, exercise regimes, surgery ,etc.
Jolie had a unique, exotic beauty.
Anyway… maybe it’s just the weight gain… since thin people age more rapidly… and you get more wrinkles.
she looks especially different in the first pic.

Rene Heasman answers:
I personally don’t like her at all, but I do agree that she has a pretty face.

Rene Heasman answers:

Ruth asks…
What is the treatment of varicose veins?… I mean is there a medicine for it or there is no…?
I hate varicose veins and because of that I want to know more about it..

Rene Heasman answers:
The goals of varicose vein treatment are to reduce symptoms and prevent complications. For some, the goal may be improved appearance. Home treatment—especially exercising, wearing compression stockings, and elevating the legs—is the first and often best approach.
Other treatment, such as sclerotherapy or ligation and stripping surgery, may be considered if symptoms and complications (such as pain, inflammation of the skin, and ulcers) develop or continue to get worse despite home treatment.
* Sclerotherapy uses an injection of a chemical (sclerosant) into a varicose vein to damage and scar the inside lining of the vein, causing the vein to close.
* In ligation and stripping, incisions are made over the varicose veins, and the vein is tied off (ligated) and sometimes removed (stripped).
Treatment may be necessary to remove the damaged veins, treat complications, or correct an underlying problem that is causing the varicose veins. The size of your varicose veins affects your treatment options. Generally, larger varicose veins are treated with surgery (ligation and stripping). Smaller varicose veins and spider veins are usually treated with sclerotherapy or laser therapy.
Radiofrequency closure technique has recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is sometimes used to treat varicose veins. This procedure uses radiofrequency energy (instead of laser energy) to close off a large varicose vein in the leg. In one study, people receiving this treatment reported a high degree of satisfaction.

Michael asks…
Laser treatment for varicose veins: Does anyone have experience they would want to share?
Am apprehensive about the procedure and would like to hear from people who have already had it performed.

Rene Heasman answers:
Need more information. Are they actually varicose? How will it be done? What kind of laser? I perform vein treatments with a laser but typically for varicose i don’t do. Also, veins tend to be hereditary.

Your Questions About Cause Of Varicose Veins In Legs

Chris asks…
Pain in my legs? What could be causing this?
I’ve been having pain in my legs for quite some time now. It comes & goes, and never stays. And it’s not really that painful, it’s a dull, sometimes stinging pain.
I do wear Reebok toning shoes when I go walking and sometimes when I go out. Also, I used to be very overweight and varicose veins is in my family’s genes. Could any of these be what is causing this?
Any answers are appreciated, thanks! ![]()
I’m 19 and yes, still overweight, but exercising and dieting.

Rene Heasman answers:
Could be leg cramps… Possibility being something more than that is a 4 out of 5 chance. You could of pulled a muscle from exercise or just from moving the wrong way w/ out knowing it. It also could be that it is just growing pains… Depending on how old you are. Now if you are still overweight it could be because of the fact that you are exercising at an excessive rate, and your body isn’t used to it yet.

William asks…
I’ve had a sore on top of my foot since January! Opinions please!?
How it started:
I had a baby in 2008 with pre-existing vein issues in my left leg. I developed varicose veins during pregancy and they did not go away. I developed 2 very dark spots on the top of my left foot that over time began to look like shiny raised skin. Those 2 spots don’t look like varicose veins to me, but I was told by my OBGYN that they were caused by varicose veins.
Now here is my 4 month long dilemma: I have not worn high heels since 2007 when I got pregnant. I went out one time dancing all night in January this year wearing 4 inch heels and the VERY NEXT DAY, the dark spot on my foot no longer looked like a thick layer of shiny skin, it looked like an open sore. It started to form a scab and I thought nothing of it, I thought it would just heal like a normal sore.
But it won’t heal. I have bad circulation in my left leg and that leg will swell up if I’m on my feel too long (which is everyday due to work). Everytime the sore forms a scab, my foot ends up swelling up after a long day’s work and then the scab has split open and it hurts again. This has been going on for 4 months. I am alarmed at the fact that it is getting bigger. It started as the size of a pea, now it is the size of a dime. It is so painful sometimes that my pant leg brushing on it causes pain.
Does anyone know exactly what this is and what I can do? Will ice packs help? Support stockings? Topical treatments like ointments or herbs???
I really need advice for this. Thank you for reading my question.

Rene Heasman answers:
My advice is.. Go to your General Doctor.. And see what he/she says.. They may refer you to either a podiatrist, a vascular specialist, or a dermatologist for the condition. Good luck.. And go soon! Something small can turn into something big in NO time!

Susan asks…
This question is a little embarassing, but I am too shy to go to the doctor. I have recently discovered on the?
bottom of my butt cheek a varicose looking vein. I am really concerned because I am only 22 years old and have no other vein issues on my body. I have not ever heard of anyone getting varicose veins anywhere other than their legs or arms. I am wondering what would cause this to happen in such an unusual spot and if there is anything I can do.

Rene Heasman answers:
I tend to agree with both the answers given to you by Amber and Vindictive Vagina.
The chances are it’s nothing to worry about because the buttocks have large muscles and very few capillaries (which are what usually cause varicose veins). In many people there tends to be a lot of fatty tissue there too in which there are very few blood vessels.
However, having said that; if it really does concern you, you should bite the bullet and get a doctor’s opinion. They have spent many hours studying to know about medical problems. So, they can most likely be trusted to give you the right answer to ease your worries.

Michael asks…
Help me in medical question please (heart, immune system)?
Hello everyone, I have some problem with many medical question, Could someone please help me. Thank you so much
Question 1: A 48 years old mother of 7 children is complaining of aching pains in her legs, which she reports is getting progressively worse since the birth of her last child and gaining 15 kg in weight. During her physical examination, numerous large varicose veins are observed on her legs. What is the cause of these varicose vein and are they associated with the pain she is experiencing ?
Question 2: IF a blood clot formed and blocked the coronary artery of a person what would be the first sign and symtoms that something was wrong? And would they feel any pain and if so what would be the cause of this pain. ( FOR MY OPINION, I think the first sign of this is a heart attack but Im not sure about it
)
Question 3: Early in the history of medicine, surgeon know the immune function of the thymus was and the gland was sometimes removed !. what complication would u predict a child might display after the removal of this structure ? Would the child be more prone to viral or bacteria infection ?
Thank you for any of your comment or reply.

Rene Heasman answers:
Question 2 – this is describing a heart attack, but that is a diagnosis, not a sign.
Pain may well occur, but the patient may also describe it as “discomfort”. The classical description is feeling as though an elephant is sitting on their chest. The pain may radiate to the arm or jaw.
They will also likely be short of breath, sweating, and looking pale.
Other signs may include tachycardia or ST elevation on the ECG

Mandy asks…
Why do my legs have a constant dull pain? please help?
All of a sudden both legs have had a constant dull pain that makes me want to scream. It’s been going on for 2 weeks now. It never stops. I’m a healthy 32 women 5’6 120 lbs, I run or ran rather.. today I tried to do 3 miles and it hurt in my legs. It is not a muscle growing pain or shin splints. Something is going on. My feet hurt they feel kinda like swollen but aren’t. I’m concerned because I’ve had a PE and I didn’t know if this may cause another one. I wouldn’t have dvt because its the same in both legs. I have only 2 long varicose veins in the back of my legs and very thin ankles. It doesn’t help the pain when i raise my legs. Could it mean fibroids in uterus? I’m not pregnant, I’ve had 3 kids and my hubby has a vasomy. Please help me figure this out. I think I have low calcium but Ive started taking a multivitamin….?????

Rene Heasman answers:
It sounds like pinched muscles in your back. When pinched they can press on the nerves going to your legs and that would give you the pain you are feeling in your legs. Once you release your back muscles it should straighten this out for you. Here is how to release those muscles:
Foot Muscle:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
Because you say your feet hurt as well you might get some relief by releasing the muscle under your foot. They are usually over looked for being helpful but I found out that it can make a big difference on how your feet feel. Here’s how to release them:
With your foot in your lap place your fingers side by side at the back of the arch right in front of the heel and press in hard and hold. After 30 seconds slowly raise your toes up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your toes there for another 30 seconds.
