This treatment improves and maintains leg vein health and prevents the tendency for legs to swell due to poor circulation, pressure or exertion. Is there really any effective remedy to cure varicose veins?

Rene Heasman answers:

There are several options:
1) ligation & stripping

2) laser / radio frequency ablation
– the vein is scarred down from the inside
3) sclerotherapy / stab phlebectomies
– used for smaller veins

Your Questions About Cause Of Varicose Veins

David asks…

am i being discriminated against because of my “disability”?

i have a progressive condition with has the capability of affecting my day to day activities – i cannot stand for long periods of time without making myself ill. i have varicose veins, caused by weak veins in my legs and from being overweight in the past. (i have never been pregnant). so i know the disability discrimination act covers me, but am not sure that it covers what i am about to ask.

i work part-time (contracted 12hrs a week) in fashion retail, so the job involves an amount of standing. they say they cannot provide me with a seat at the till point as it would be in breach of their health and safety (apparently?!?) I instead am offered the opportunity to have a 15 min break in a 4 hour shift on the provision that i work the extra 15 mins to make the time up (none of my other colleagues are offered this) so i technically end up working 4hrs and 15mins every shift, but only get paid for 4hrs. is this allowed? or should i be given the break as part of my 4 hrs and not in addition to?
under normal circumstances the amount of hours you have to work to get a 15 min break is 4 1/2.

i am in the UK. thanks.
i just want to add that i had been umemployed for 3 years because of my condtion and lack of skills prior to getting this job, i was sick of being on benefits and wanted to work.
however i never intended working in retail to be a long term solution as it is panning out to be. but time flies and what with the recession, finding alternative and more suitable employment has not been fruitful.

Rene Heasman answers:

I am baffled, under which H&S legislation does it deny someone working at a till point a seat and if there is,what about the cashiers in most supermarkets and other retail outlets.

Lizzie asks…

Are varicose veins and spider veins the same thing? and if so, what can i do to prevent them?

I work at a candy store which requires me to stand for long periods of time and am told that that is the cause of them as well as crossing your legs, what can i do to prevent this from happening? can i stand a certain way to relieve my legs?

Rene Heasman answers:

Spider veins, or telangectasias, are the most superficial (closest to your skin) veins. They are veins that have simply burst.
Varicose veins are deeper, more prominent, and often, more painful.

There have been some plastic surgeons who claim success with injecting saline or some such do make these go away.
Wearing support stockings is one potential solution.

Sandy asks…

Why do i have varicose veins on my face?

They have just appeared. I’m a size 6-8 & i haven’t put on any weight. I just don’t understand why they have just appeared, there to the light and right to my mouth you can’t see clearly them unless i stretch the skin & are very small. What could of caused this?! I’m trying to get pregnant but i’m not at the min!
I think there thead veins actually small purple!

Rene Heasman answers:

Are you sure they are varicose veins.

Varicose veins are swollen veins (usually on the legs) that look lumpy and bluish through the skin.

Does this describe yours or are yours more like what are called thread veins, which are tiny veins that appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and legs. Small thread veins are red, but larger ones look purplish.

Maria asks…

Spider veins , help !? :( ?

Im 15 years old and ive recentley noticed that i have spider veins right above my calves. They arent that bad, and i can easily cover them up with makeup, but just the though of them gets me upset. Ive been exercising and running a lot lately because im trying to loose weight. Im not overweight or anything though, because i know being overweight can put pressure on your legs and cause spider veins. My moms also has varicose and spider veins, but she told me that the reasoning why she has them is because she smokes. So im not sure if its really hereditary ? Can someone please give me some advice on how to make them go away , or appear lighter. Does sitting in the sun and getting color in my legs help? Im also very light skinned , so they are more noticible .

Rene Heasman answers:

Reducing your sugar intake would probably help.

See items 33 and 135 in http://www.rheumatic.org/sugar.htm

Betty asks…

Varicose vein in umbilical cord?

Im currently 32 weeks with baby number 4.
Has anyone had any experiance with a varicose vein in the umbilical cord? I asked today, and my doctor told me not to worry, but sometimes the vein can cause a clot, and the clot could potentaly kill baby. Im not that excited about her answer, and baby is growing on the small side so im a little anxious now. I am having weekly scans to keep an eye on the situation.
Any personal experiances of this would be really good to hear.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

Rene Heasman answers:

Terrifying. I’ve never even heard of that. I hope you and the baby are okay!

Your Questions About Varicose Veins Pictures

William asks…

I’m 19 and I have varicose vein? How to get rid of it.?

I have bulging varicose vein behind my right knee. No pain or bleeding yet but I find it really ugly!
I’m only 19 but i’m still a student so I didn’t stand around a lot. I tried elevating my right leg during my sleep but it doesn’t help. Help me! I’m really depressed about it and I don’t have thousands to fork out for expensive surgeries. I can fork out hundreds though.

I can’t find any picture on the internet to show you because mine isn’t as serious as those on the internet yet. But mine is only behind the knees and it has not extend out to my lower calve yet. I only have varicose vein on my right leg. Tell me what can I do to get rid of them please? I’m really miserable about it

Rene Heasman answers:

Absolutely nothing.

Rene Heasman answers:

Sclerotherapy – this procedure uses a highly concentrated saline solution or a specially made detergent that is injected directly into the vein, causing the vein to disappear gradually over three to six weeks. To read more >>>

http://www.specialistvascularclinic.com.au/sydneyveinclinic/sclerotherapy.html

Cost of treating one leg ranges from about a $100-$250. >>> http://theparks.net/what-does-sclerotherapy-cost/

Maria asks…

I’m only 15 and I already have a varicose vein?

I guess it’s genetic because my mom has them and her mom did as well.
I’m not really overweight at all; 5’2″ and about 110 lbs
If I do shoulder stand (picture: http://www.michael4reiki.com/images/shoulder_stand.jpg ) and walk every day along with ballet which I do normally, will it go away? or do I need some kind of laser surgery?

Rene Heasman answers:

Varicose veins don’t normally just go away, even if you exercise a lot. Toning up your leg muscles and wearing support hose while you rest can help reduce their appearance and prevent more from appearing but there is no magic fix. They are mostly (though not always) genetic, like stretch marks and cellulite. If you want to cover them up, you can wear pants, leggings, long skirts, and pantyhose/tights, or you could try self-tanner (getting a “real” tan will only make them worse)… BUT if they are fairly small and you don’t have very many, chances are most people will not even notice them– so don’t sweat it!

Steven asks…

My left testicle feels veiny?

Yesterday I noticed the side of my left testicle was feeling a bit veiny (like the way the back of the testices usually feel). I had a bath and that made it even more veiny, plus the left one was hanging. It’s not so bad today, I have to wait until Monday to visit the doctor. When I was looking up about this I found a picture of varicose veins in a testicle and I think that might be what it is, is this common? I thought only elderly people get varicose veins?
I’ve just started regularly shaving there too, don’t know if that has anything to do with it?

Rene Heasman answers:

Even young people can have Varicose veins. Varicose veins in your testes will increase when you lie down and will be lesser in the morning than the evening. Varicose veins are not hard to treat but left sided varicose need a little further poking for reasons pertaining to the venous drainage of the left testicle. Hopefully it’s not that bad. Let the doc see you .

Sandy asks…

Did Angelina Jolie get Botox or something? Check out her appearance with Brad last night…?

Hey everyone… so is it just me or did angelina jolie get botox? Or maybe she actually realized she was getting anorexic and gained 10 lbs or something? look at these pictures of her last night:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2009-08-11-basterds_N.htm

I’ve thought Angelina was looking old (aging badly for a 34 year old) and WAY TOO THIN (varicose veins in arms and her forehead) but check out those pictures. WOW. she looks like she’s in her mid twenties… or maybe it’s because the picture isn’t zoomed in enough?

Anyway, she looks hot (and i’m a girl) …. but also her legs and arms look toned and thicker than before.

The one bad thing is that I’ve thought despite her aging, she looks like one of the world’s most beautiful woman. Now she just looks hot/sexy/pretty… but like generic. She looks like jessica alba, megan fox, scarlett Jo… like they’re all pretty… but most girls can be with makeup, exercise regimes, surgery ,etc.

Jolie had a unique, exotic beauty.

Anyway… maybe it’s just the weight gain… since thin people age more rapidly… and you get more wrinkles.

she looks especially different in the first pic.

Rene Heasman answers:

I personally don’t like her at all, but I do agree that she has a pretty face.
