Rene Heasman answers:

How Does Laser Surgery Work?

Laser surgery works by sending very strong bursts of light onto the vein that makes the vein slowly fade and disappear. Lasers are very direct and accurate, and only damage the area being treated. All skin types and colors can be safely treated with lasers. The American Academy of Dermatology believes that the new laser technology is more effective with fewer side effects. Laser surgery is more comfortable for patients because there are no needles or incisions. When the laser hits the skin, the patient only feels a small pinch, and the skin is soothed by cooling both before and after the laser is applied. There may be some redness or swelling of the skin right after the treatment, but this disappears within a few days. The skin also may be discolored, but this will disappear within one to two weeks. Treatments last 15 to 20 minutes, and depending on the severity of the veins, two to five treatments are generally needed to remove varicose veins in the legs.

Patients can return to normal activity right after treatment.

There are several types of lasers that can be used to treat varicose veins and spider veins on the legs and face. Although your doctor will decide which type is best to treat your condition, some of the lasers used to treat veins include yellow light lasers, green light lasers, and other intense pulsed light systems. Again, health insurance coverage varies. If the treatment is done for cosmetic reasons only, it may not be covered.
Closure Technique
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 1999 approved this new procedure for use in the United States. Although it is not as widely used as sclerotherapy, some doctors feel it may become the standard for treating varicose veins. It is not very invasive and can be done in a doctor’s office. This method involves placing a special catheter or a very small tube into the vein. Once inside, the catheter sends radiofrequency energy to cause the vein wall to shrink and seal shut. Healthier veins surrounding the closed vein can then restore the normal flow of blood. As this happens, symptoms from the varicose vein decrease. The only side effect is slight bruising.

Surgery is used mostly to treat very large varicose veins.

COST:

The cost of laser therapy can range from $300 to $800 per leg. Ambulatory phlebectomy, an outpatient procedure, involves removing smaller varicose veins.

Get your varicose veins treatment in India.Varicose veins Surgery is very cheap in India.(whether its phlebotomy , sclerotherapy, vein stripping, or by the latest elves laser and other types of surgery also)There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges varicose veins surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as all types of surgery is not covered by insurance.

Susan asks…

have u heard/used the varicose vein treatment called vnus – the closure?

i was told there is only 7 or 9 places in the country that does this procedure. my hubby is 34 yrs old and the doc said he has legs of a 60 yr old. they want to do 8 surgerys whereas most ppl have like 3 or 4 done. he did have a clot bout 3 yrs ago from 1 of those veins. he’s NEVER been on anistesia and he has sleep aptnea (sp?). the doc said his vein has pretty much made a duplicate of theirselves. the vein in the back calve has branches coming off and they are leaking, this is in both legs. this procedure is where they insert a catheter into the vein, it delivers radiofrequency, remove the cath and the vein colapes causing the blood to reroute to healthy veins. just 2 veins to be worked on cost over 16,000.00.
my concerns are that this procedure seems to be kinda new and i can’t find much info or results on the web.
have u had this done or know of anyone who has? what was the experience, good and bad?
it’s scary cuz he’s never been put 2 sleep, has sleep probs and had a clot b4..

Rene Heasman answers:

I had the vnus closure done 3 days ago where I live in Maryland. It lasted only 30 minutes and was over fast. They put iodine all over my leg and then sprayed a numbing spray on it before they numbed it with a needle. They made a few small incisions (very small) and closed the leaky vein. I go back in two weeks for a ambulatory phlebectomy where they remove the old veins. That procedure is also very fast and should be painless. It is covered under most insurance policies because it is considered medical.

Richard asks…

Varicose/Spider veins and EVLT or Sclerotherapy.?

I have some minor varicose veins, but they are emerging quickly. To find out how much the more recent treatments cost yo must have a consultation (and most likely pay for a consultation too). I was just wondering what kind of ball park amount I can estimate for the removal of veins. Thanks a lot:)

Rene Heasman answers:

I dunno but I wish I didn’t have varicose veins either and i’m only 25. My doctor doesn’t advise removing them because she said you’re kinda screwed if you need emergency surgery and need the vein for use in another part of your body.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Being some of the most painful, and unsightly veins on the human body. Varicose veins are often found on the legs, but are not restricted to that area of the the body either. You need to know what causes the veins to appear before you seek treatment. Each persons case of varicose veins is different too. The heart bumps blood through arteries and is returned via veins.

Veins carry the used blood back to the heart so it can be reused again. These vessels work for us all throughout our whole lives. Veins can lead to conditions and diseases like varicose veins.

Hormone abnormalities, pregnancy, genetics, and extended periods of standing or sitting all contribute to varicose veins. It is necessary to find out what causes them in your body before treatment can be given for them.

Obesity is also a cause of varicose veins. Due to the strain that is put onto the legs from the extra weight they appear. One needs to keep a average body weight to lessen the chances of obtaining varicose veins. Salt intake has been known to increase blood volume, and body weight as well.

Reducing the intake of salt and starting a exercise program as both good ideas to keep your weight down. A good jog a day keeps the muscles toned and will improve blood circulation.

With age comes varicose veins too sometimes! Over time your blood veins loose their elasticity which then causes the blood to pool in your veins which gives them that varicose look. Deep vein thrombosis is also another cause of varicose veins, it leads to discoloration of the veins, making them a dark blue or purple color, and it twists the veins and gives the the look of being bulged.

Overexposure to the sun also can cause these veins. A lot of sun exposure could result in the veins appearing on your face. Heredity also plays a vital role too. Since women with a history of varicose veins in their family do suffer a higher risk of getting them over other people.

If you wear sun block and limit the exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, maintain a good diet, exercise routinely, and keep your weight down, you might be able to avoid varicose veins.
